Google Applications …
I was very excited to hear about Google opening up its e-mail services for Internet domain owners. This made it possible for individuals and organizations to integrate e-mail into their respective websites and provide huge spam free mailboxes with minimum effort and technical knowledge. Google also made available a set of office automation tools for creating documents, spreadhsheet and presentations online.
With just a few mx and cname record changes in DNS servers I was able to integrate my website with gmail using custom e-mail addresses and custom urls like mail.jasjit.net and docs.jasjit.net for web based e-mail access and direct access to Google docs.
In first week of April 2008, Google putting icing on the cake by integrating Google docs with Google gears. Now, it is possible for users to update their documents offline using the same browser interface and synchronize them when they are connected to the Internet. This is not a perfect implementation and it comes with its limitations e.g. currently it is not possible to create new documents offline. Also, Initial page load in off line mode is bit slow. Neverthless, this is a big step forward. I am planning to use Google Gears and try and work with Google Docs offline. Will share my findings on this blog by next week.
